Resetting a BlackBerry to Factory Settings

Home » Mobile & Cellphone » BlackBerry Guides » BlackBerry - Reload Factory Settings
Published: Andreas Wiebe, 15 February 2010 - 00:44

On devices loaded with BlackBerry OS 4.3 and higher it is possible to remove the IT policy using a newer version of the javaloader.exe tool. This guide covers using javaloader.exe as well as the JL_Cmder tool to reset a BlackBerry to Factory settings.

For newer devices that have a lower version OS it is possible to first load new firmware then follow this procedure, this will not be covered in this guide

For older devices that have a lower version OS with no version above 4.2 available there are other work-arounds available, these will not be covered here. Pinstack.com's jdellasala covers these methods here: forums.pinstack.com/blogs/3389/blog84.html

Warnings

  • WARNING: The Javaloader.exe and JL_Cmder tools should be handled with extreme care, particularly when used for wiping devices, loading modules, or removing modules. EndUserGuides.com, BlackBerryGuide.com, drewiebe.ca, and its affiliates take no responsibility in the use of these tools, use at your own risk. Please read our disclaimer for more information.
  • WARNING: This process also wipes the BlackBerry, be sure to back up any data you require before proceeding.
  • WARNING: You may need to reactivate your BlackBerry on your providers network after this process.

Obtaining Javaloader

Resetting to Factory using Javaloader.exe

It is assumed that you have experience working in a command line interface to use this method. If you are unsure please see "Resetting to Factory using JL_Cmder" below for a simpler process.

It is assumed you have already obtained JavaLoader.exe and that your BlackBerry is already connected via USB

  1. Open a command line and navigate to where you have placed the JavaLoader.exe file
  2. Before we do anything else, let's make sure the version of JavaLoader.exe you have has the resettofactory functionality:
    1. Type javaloader and press Enter
    2. Look for: resettofactory in the output. If you cannot find this you'll need a newer version of the javaloader tool, the JL_Cmder v.1.9.0 contains a newer version (see Obtaining Javaloader above).
    3. Continue once you have verified your version of javaloader is capable of resetting to factory.
  3. Depending on your situation, choose the most appropriate of the steps below:

    1. If you have a password enabled and you know the password:
      1. Type: javaloader -u -w{your password} resettofactory (replace {your password} including the braces{} with your actual password) and press Enter:
    2. If you have a password enabled and you do not know the password:
      1. You will need to wipe the device to reset the password. You can do this by entering the password incorrectly 10 times on the BlackBerry or via javaloader.

Once done you'll need to wait for the BlackBerry to reboot, do not enter a new password when it reboots (do not do anything on the BlackBerry at this point).

      2. Maxing out password attempts via javaloader:
        1. Type javaloader -u wipe and press Enter. You will be prompted for a password, enter it incorrectly 10 times and the device will wipe itself:
        2. Wait until the BlackBerry reboots before continuing, do not enter a new password (do not do anything on the BlackBerry at this point).
      3. Continue as if no password is enabled (number 3 below)
    3. If you have no password enabled:
      1. Type javaloader -u resettofactory and press Enter:
  4. Once your device reboots it will be reset to factory settings, you may need to reactivate it on your providers network. If you previously made a backup you can now reload it to your BlackBerry.

Resetting to Factory using JL_Cmder

It is assumed you have already obtained the installer version of JL_Cmder

It is assumed that your BlackBerry is already connected via USB.

Installing JL_Cmder (installer version):

  1. Double-click on the "JL_Cmder v1.9 installer.zip" file:
  2. Double-click on the "JL_Cmder v1.9.0 Installer" folder:
  3. Double-click on the "JL_Cmder v1.9.0.exe" file:
  4. Click "Yes" on the dialog:
  5. JL_Cmder is now installed
  6. To start JL_Cmder, double-click on the "JL_Cmder" icon on your desktop:

Using JL_Cmder to factory reset your BlackBerry:

  1. Start JL_Cmder:
  2. Press any key to continue, Type Y if your BlackBerry has a password:
  3. If you selected N in the previous step skip this step, otherwise enter your password:
  4. You're now at the main menu, type 5 (resettofactory):
  5. A warning will appear, read it carefully then type Y if you're sure you want to reset the BlackBerry to factory settings:
  6. The BlackBerry will be reset to its factory state, you can ignore this last screen (you do not need to remove your battery, your data is gone, it cannot be backed-up now):
  7. Once your device reboots it will be reset to factory settings, you may need to reactivate it on your providers network. If you previously made a backup you can now reload it to your BlackBerry.
